In the history of road safety, few innovations have been as revolutionary and effective as the three-point seat belt. This device, which we now consider essential in any vehicle, has saved millions of lives since its invention in 1959. What few people know is that Volvo patented this design and, in an unprecedented move, decided to release it so that all car brands could implement it without restrictions.
This altruistic decision changed the history of automotive safety and demonstrated that innovation can go hand in hand with social responsibility.
Before the three-point seat belt: A deadly deficiency
Before the invention of the modern seat belt, car safety was rudimentary. Some cars included two-point seatbelts, similar to those in airplanes, that secured only the passenger’s waist.
The problem with these seat belts is that, in an accident, the body could be forced forward, causing serious injuries to the head, neck, and abdomen. In many cases, these belts were not only ineffective but could also cause additional damage in high-speed collisions.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the fatality rate in traffic accidents was alarmingly high, with thousands of victims each year. The automotive industry began exploring solutions, but a truly safe and easy-to-use mechanism had not yet been developed.
The Engineer Behind the Revolution: Nils Bohlin
The solution came in 1959 from Nils Bohlin, a Swedish engineer hired by Volvo. Bohlin had experience in the aeronautical industry, where he had worked on the design of ejection seats and pilot safety systems.
With this knowledge of mechanics and biomechanics, Bohlin designed a system that better distributed the forces of an impact across the vehicle occupant’s body. His design combined a lap seat belt with a diagonal strap that crossed the torso, thus securing both the upper and lower body.
The result was a three-point anchor design that was easy to use and extremely effective at reducing injuries in the event of a collision.
Volvo’s decision: A legacy of safety
After developing the three-point seat belt, Volvo decided to patent the invention. However, in an unexpected twist, instead of restricting its use to its vehicles or charging royalties to other manufacturers, Volvo decided to release the patent, allowing any automotive company to use it free of charge.
Why would a company do this, giving up a competitive advantage? The answer is simple: saving lives was more important than profits.
The Swedish company recognized that this invention had global potential and that, by sharing it with the automotive industry, they could drastically reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in traffic accidents.
According to Volvo’s estimates, the three-point seat belt has saved more than one million lives since its introduction.
Impact of seat belts on road safety
Since Volvo shared its invention, governments and road safety agencies around the world began requiring the mandatory use of seat belts in cars.
Studies have shown that:
✅ Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death in an accident by approximately 50%.
✅ In high-speed collisions, a seat belt significantly reduces the severity of injuries.
✅ It is the most effective safety device ever designed in the history of the automobile.
Today, seat belts are a mandatory standard in vehicle manufacturing in almost every country. Thanks to this invention, car accident fatalities have been drastically reduced, making them a fundamental component of passive safety.
